Where to Place Your Rug: The Ultimate Dining, Living & Bedroom Guide
A well-placed rug has the power to transform a room, grounding your furniture, defining the space, and adding both comfort and cohesion. But one of the biggest questions we hear is: what size rug do I need, and where should I place it?
The answer depends on your room layout, your furniture, and how you want the space to feel. To make it effortless, we’ve created this guide for the most common dining, living, and bedroom arrangements, so your rug always feels like it belongs.
Dining Room: Framing the Table in Style
In dining spaces, your rug should do more than just sit under the table. The right size creates balance, ensures chairs sit comfortably on the rug (even when pulled out), and visually anchors the dining area.
- Extra Large Rectangle (300 × 400): Perfect for big family tables with 8–10 seats. This size extends well beyond the chairs, ensuring they never catch on the edge.
- Large Rectangle (250 × 350): Ideal for 6–8 seat tables, offering generous coverage without overwhelming the room.
- Medium Rectangle (250 × 300 or 200 × 300): Works beautifully under smaller rectangular dining tables with 4–6 chairs.
- Round Rugs (300 × 300 or 240 × 240): A round rug under a round table creates perfect symmetry. The larger size works for 6 seats, while the medium size suits 4 seats comfortably.
Tip: Always allow at least 60–70cm from the table edge to the edge of your rug, so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.

Living Room: Defining Comfort Zones
In living rooms, a rug is what pulls your furniture together into a consistent zone. The goal is to create connection between your sofa, armchairs, coffee table, and the overall room.
- Extra Large Rectangle (300 x 400): Best for spacious living rooms. All furniture (sofa + chairs) can sit fully on the rug for a luxe, enveloping feel.
- Large Rectangle (250 × 350): A versatile choice. Place your sofa fully on, or just the front legs of the sofa and chairs for a balanced look.
- Medium Rectangle (250 × 300 or 200 × 300): Ideal for smaller spaces. The sofa’s front legs sit on the rug, while the back legs rest off giving the illusion of a bigger room.
- Small Rectangle (160 × 230): Perfect for compact rooms or under a coffee table.
- Round Rugs (300 x 300 or 240 × 240): A contemporary way to soften living rooms with angular furniture. Works beautifully with floating armchairs or curved sofas.
Tip: Avoid rugs that are too small — they can make your space feel disjointed. A good rule: your rug should be large enough to connect at least the front legs of your key furniture pieces.

Bedroom: Grounding Serenity
A rug in the bedroom adds warmth and softness underfoot while anchoring the bed as the central feature of the space. Placement depends on whether you want the rug to sit fully or partially under the bed.
Extra Large Rectangle (300 x 400) & Large Rectangle (250 x 350)
For a spacious, opulent feel, position the bed frame and bedside tables fully atop the rug. Allowing 70–90 cm of rug to extend beyond the edges of the bed creates a generous, enveloping layer of comfort. This arrangement enhances balance and proportion while highlighting the rug as a key design element.
Medium Rectangle (250 x 350 & 200 x 300)
With a medium-sized rug, place the lower two-thirds of the bed across the rug. This approach ensures a soft, plush landing for bare feet each morning, while maintaining a tailored, stylish look. It works particularly well in rooms where space is slightly more limited but luxury is still desired.
Small Rectangle (160 x 230)
For cozier bedrooms, a smaller rug can be paired with runners along either side of the bed. This symmetrical placement creates a polished, elegant effect while adding practical comfort as you step out of bed.
Medium Round (240 x 240)
For a playful, contemporary twist, place an off-centre round rug beneath the bed. This unexpected arrangement adds personality and a sense of artistry to the space, while still complementing the room’s refined aesthetic
Tip: Always ensure at least two-thirds of your bed sits on the rug — this makes the room feel intentional, not cut off.

Why Rug Placement Matters
The right size and placement don’t just protect your floors; it changes the entire mood of a room. Rugs create harmony, enhance comfort, and add that finishing touch that makes a space feel designed, not accidental.
Think of your rug as the stage for your furniture: it frames the scene and brings everything into focus.
