Extra Large Rugs: How to Choose the Right Size and Style

Most rooms are fitted with a rug that is one size too small. It is the most common styling mistake there is, and it is why plenty of living rooms feel disjointed even when the furniture is lovely. An extra large rug fixes that. It pulls the seating together, makes the room feel bigger and gives an open plan space a clear centre.

This guide explains what counts as an extra large rug, how to choose the right size for each room, and how to style one so it looks deliberate. Every By Carmont rug is handmade in India from 100% premium polypropylene, and the largest sizes run up to 300 x 400cm. You can see the whole range in our rug collection.

What counts as an extra large rug?

There is no official definition, but in practice an extra large rug starts at around 250 x 350cm and goes up from there. Smaller sizes suit a single seating group or a small dining table, while the biggest sizes are made for open plan living, king beds and long dining tables. These are the sizes in the By Carmont range that matter for larger rooms:

Size Best for
200 x 300cm Standard living room or bedroom
250 x 300cm Larger living room, or a 6 seat dining table
250 x 350cm Open plan lounge, or a queen bed
300 x 300cm A large square zone in an open plan room
300 x 400cm The largest sizes: open plan living, a king bed or an 8 seat dining table

Not every design comes in every size, so check the product page for the sizes available. You can browse by size too: 200 x 300cm, 250 x 300cm, 250 x 350cm and 300 x 400cm.

Why going bigger works

A larger rug does three things a smaller one cannot. First, it lets the furniture sit properly on the rug. When all the legs of the sofa and armchairs are on the rug, the whole group looks anchored. When only the front legs are on it, the look is still tidy. When none of the legs are on it, the rug looks like a mat floating in the middle of the floor.

Second, it makes the room feel larger. A big rug draws the eye out to the edges of the space, which is why even a modest room can look bigger with a generous rug in it. Third, it replaces the patchwork of smaller rugs that tend to creep into open plan rooms with one clear statement.

Choosing the size room by room

Living room

Start with the sofa. A rug should extend at least 20 to 30cm beyond each end of the sofa, and the front legs of every piece of seating should sit on it. In a larger room, aim for all legs on the rug. A three seat sofa is typically around 210cm wide, so 250 x 350cm gives you comfortable margins and room for a coffee table. In a very large lounge, 300 x 400cm lets you float the whole seating group on the rug.

Dining room

The rule is simple: the rug should extend about 60cm past the table on every side, so the chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out. That works out like this:

Dining table Minimum rug needed Size to look for
4 seater, 120 x 120cm 240 x 240cm 240 x 240cm
6 seater, 180 x 90cm 300 x 210cm 250 x 300cm
8 seater, 240 x 100cm 360 x 220cm 300 x 400cm

Bedroom

Place the rug under the lower two thirds of the bed so it extends past both sides and the foot. A typical Australian queen bed is about 153cm wide, so 250 x 350cm leaves about 50cm either side. A king bed is about 183cm wide, and 300 x 400cm gives a generous 60cm border. This sizing also works well in a main bedroom with a seating corner.

Open plan spaces

In an open plan room, use one rug per zone. A large rug under the lounge and a second under the dining table separates the two areas without walls, and leaves clear floor between them as a walkway. Choose two rugs in the same palette or from the same collection so the zones relate to each other. Our size and placement guide and rug placement guide show how to position each one.

Check before you buy

  • Mark it out. Tape the rug's size on the floor, or lay newspaper down, and look at it from the doorway. You will know straight away whether it feels right.
  • Check door clearance. The Capella rug, for example, is 10mm thick, which is slim enough to clear most doors.
  • Plan the walkways. Leave 30 to 50cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls so the rug looks intentional.
  • Think about delivery. A rug this size arrives rolled and is heavy, so check the doorway and stairs and have two people to lift it.
  • Add an underlay. On timber or tile, an underlay keeps a large rug from creeping. Browse our rug underlays, which come in sizes to suit larger rugs.

Styling an extra large rug

A large rug changes how pattern and colour behave. A small pattern that looks delicate on a small rug can turn busy at scale, while bold patterns come into their own.

Let stripes and chevrons run. Argyle and Belgrave use clean stripes in an earth-toned taupe palette, and Bhumi has a handmade chevron weave in tones of earth, sand and stone. These patterns look best on a larger rug, where there is room to see the rhythm. Browse the patterned rugs for more.

Keep neutrals calm. A big expanse of colour can feel heavy, so a tonal rug is a safe choice. Tone comes in four softly blended natural hues, and Natural Hues brings together earthy tones and subtle textures.

Go dark or green for drama. A large black rug grounds a room and adds depth, and Hunter brings deep green tones that suit a bold, plant-filled space. The Capella is woven from 100% premium polypropylene, and each square is individually handwoven and hand sewn, which gives a large rug a seamless, refined finish.

Do not crowd it. A large rug looks best when it is given space. If the room has a lot of furniture, choose a simple, tonal design so the rug supports the room rather than competing with it, and let a bolder pattern lead in a room with fewer pieces.

Extra large rugs for outdoor spaces

The same logic applies on a patio. A larger rug makes an outdoor dining or lounge area feel like a proper room. Because By Carmont rugs are waterproof, UV resistant and made for outdoor use, a large size can sit under an alfresco table or a full lounge set. Our outdoor rugs and the outdoor rug buying guide cover sizing and placement in detail.

Looking after a big rug

Vacuum it regularly, wipe spills as soon as they happen and rotate it every few months so wear spreads evenly. For a deeper clean, take it outdoors and hose it down on a lawn or driveway, then leave it flat in the open air to dry. By Carmont rugs are designed to be hosed or wiped clean, not machine washed, and our care guide sets out the steps.

Questions people ask

Is an extra large rug too big for a small room?

It can be. Leave at least 30cm of floor showing around the edge, and if that is not possible, drop down a size. In a small room, a rug that is slightly too big looks cramped, while a rug that is slightly too small can still look fine.

Can I use two rugs in one room?

Yes, in a large or open plan space. Use one rug per zone, and choose rugs that share a colour or come from the same collection.

Do large rugs need an underlay?

On hard floors it is worth it. An underlay stops the rug creeping, protects the floor and extends the life of the rug. Some designs note on their product page that no underlay is required, so check before you order.

A large rug is a big commitment, so see it first. Order a rug sample to check the weave and colour against your floor and furniture, or book a design consultation to talk through sizing for your space. You can also visit the Sydney showroom by appointment.

Conclusion

The right extra large rug is one that lets the furniture sit comfortably, leaves a border of floor and suits the scale of the room. Measure the space, match the size to your sofa, table or bed, and choose a pattern that can handle the scale. With durable, handmade polypropylene in sizes up to 300 x 400cm, you can fill a big room with a rug that looks considered and stands up to everyday life.
